Year 7 students at Framingham Earl High School in Norfolk, who receive additional learning support, spent a series of afternoons exploring air pollution and its effect on the body and our environment. We measured PM2.5 levels around the school ground, including car park and playing fields, using a portable air pollution monitor and compared these figures (around 2-5 parts per million) to international recordings, including New Delhi which can measure up to 100 parts per million.
To engage peers and community members with our research, we made a short film combining layers of content including overhead projector silhouettes, mini-theatre kits and an audio narrative provided by the students. During the sessions at school, we also tried stop-motion animation and, using charcoal, we illustrated smog interacting with the human anatomy. Workshops were supported by Jennie Pedley at Edible East. A trailer version and the full length version can be watched below, and on Framingham's YouTube channel here.
This short film, titled Clean Our Turf, aims to promote active travel to school, including walking and cycling, and was inspired by Norfolk County Coucil's A2Better Scheme. Clean Our Turf is a youth social action project, part of the Green Influencers Scheme and funded by Ernest Cook Trust.
